Student Opportunities

Pre-dental and pre-medical students are an important part of every Smiles for Latin America team. Each expedition includes approximately 15 students.

Students have opportunities to gain valuable experience in one or more of the following areas:

• General dentistry. Students may have the opportunity to serve as the assistant to a dentist in filling cavities and other necessary dental work.
• Endodontics. Students may have the opportunity to assist and observe an endodontist in root canal treatments.
• Oral Surgery. Students may have the opportunity to learn more about oral surgery by observing an oral and maxillofacial surgeon remove third molars and other necessary extractions.

NOTE: Students are allowed to assist but only licensed professionals are allowed to give treatment.

Smiles for Latin America expeditions are a great opportunity for students to gain valuable service experience and build their resumes in preparation for application to dental and medical school.
